Dear Sweetheart

Dear Sweetheart

Dear Sweetheart,

I’ve only blogged to you once before but I’ve certainly talked about you enough — on here and to others. I still say hi to you whenever I walk by your picture in the living room and not a day goes by where I don’t think of you. I can’t help myself. A little piece of my heart will always be yours.

It is a big day here today, and in a way, it is a day to honor you, too. Because it would never be happening if it weren’t for meeting up with the likes of you 15 years ago.

Tonight, a new little heart is going to trot through these doors.  He is very different than you, much smaller and quite a bit younger than when you entered our lives. And from what I’ve seen and experienced already, he has a completely different personality, too. I only wish I could have seen you interact with him. I think you two would have had a lot of fun together though something tells me that his youthful enthusiasm and vigor would have probably pestered the crap out of you in a uniquely charming way, much like two brothers or sisters quibble, but you would have quickly shown him who was in charge.

Over two years have passed since our home went quiet, and your dad and I have decided it needs some noise again. You are not being replaced for you could never be replaced. Instead, I like to think of today as a day that honors you, for coming into our lives and reminding us how insignificant all of that other “stuff” is that distracts us away from the real point of life and for showing how important it is to love and be loved.

So today we let another little dog into our home and hearts, and we honor you, Dexter, for showing us that we have this kind of love in our hearts to give.

All my love,
