NEWS ~ First-time Novelist Delivers Romance Designed to Break the Rules

TAMPA, Fla. (Aug. 20, 2013) — Author Chris Kuhn releases her debut novel The Muse Unlocked today, a contemporary romance which tells the moving story of a successful woman who embarks on a journey to discover self-love and the confidence to be loved. The book is currently available in both print (14.99 USD) and electronic (6.99 USD) formats on

In The Muse Unlocked, Kuhn writes, “All women want to feel desired and see themselves through someone else’s eyes as desirable.” She transports readers to Lakeland, Florida to meet Cate Mullen, a successful TV and film screenwriter who has traveled back home to attend her 20-year high school reunion and finds herself facing an awkward and unexpected turn of events at the book’s start. Kuhn says when she developed the character of Cate Mullen it was imperative that the screenwriter not be an ordinary contemporary romance heroine.

“For one thing, Cate is 38. She’s not fresh out of college like so many female protagonists in the genre but established and successful. She’s also sharp-tongued and funny, someone you could take to happy hour and know there would be some lively conversation and laughs over cocktails,” says Kuhn. “If I did my job right, I believe that there is some facet of Cate with which women of all ages and backgrounds will be able to identify.”

In the book, Kuhn also introduces readers to Oliver Sand, an actor 10 years younger than Cate, cast to play the lead role in the movie she has co-written, much to her dismay. Although thriving professionally, Cate struggles to make sense of her personal life; that is, until this younger man enters the picture and leaves the usually talkative writer speechless. As Cate’s life begins to unravel, it is this new mysterious stranger she finds at her every turn. Kuhn says she was intrigued that the older woman-younger man scenario is rarely explored in the popular genre and notes that Oliver Sand is no ordinary literary hero.

“I feel Oliver represents that ideal man that every woman wants and every man wants to be,” says Kuhn. “But as we peel back the layers, we begin to realize that there’s more to his story than the beautiful canvas on display.”

Known for her editorial contributions to numerous publications in the Tampa Bay region and beyond, Kuhn will welcome guests at a launch party for the book from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22 at BoConcept Tampa. During the event, attendees will have an opportunity to meet the author and purchase a signed copy of The Muse Unlocked while experiencing the settings, emotions, tastes and sounds behind the novel and hearing firsthand what inspired them.
