When I realize I’ve reached Day 9 of the 10-day movie challenge, I’m both amazed and sad because I could go on picking films forever – but don’t worry, I won’t. I have been busy these past 9 days after being tagged by a friend on Facebook and asked to do the following:
I’ve talked about this film before, along with a few of my other ‘Ten Flicks’ selections in a past essay of mine “Therapy from the Aisle Seats,“and that influenced me to spotlight this film here in this movie challenge. Anything that prompts me to want to write about it or talk about it, well, that’s impact. The film is THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY (1995), starring the incomparable Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood, who also directs the film which unrolls like a gorgeous tapestry. The landscape offers a great palette to work with, and the cinematography alone would be reason enough to see this movie. But it delivers far more.
This is another film that is hard to find an image to stump Facebook friends so I instead opted with a fairly simple shot (above) but anyone who knows the movie will know how complex this scene is. It is by far my favorite scene of the film, both eloquent and gut-wrenching at the same time.
There is a charming, romantic and lyrical quality of this film with the language, the performances and even the cinematography, and I attribute that to how important music is to the director and how well he integrates his love of blues music especially into a scene. You can practically feel the heat from the screen as a background tune frames a scene like this.
Hear why this film means so much to me (but excuse me for my passion as I go over 5 minutes just a smidge). The film has left such a lovely, lingering impression, and I enjoy sharing more about that. As always, thanks for reading (and listening). x ~ Chris K.
