Yesterday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 2018 Oscar nominees. Click here to see the complete list. Have you seen many of these films? Of the main six categories I normally follow closest (the four acting categories, best picture and best director), I’ve only seen two of the films (BLACK PANTHER and VICE). I plan on re-watching BLACK PANTHER because it was so long ago, and I want to be able to compare the eight Best Picture nominees more accurately. I posted my Oscar predictions before the announcement and my success? Meh. I did okay, not spectacular. I did manage to nab the five Best Animated Feature nominations correctly. But for most categories, I was off by at least one nom, sometimes two.
For many years, I’ve been embarking on an Oscar run during which I lay out a plan aiming to see all of the nominees in those six main categories. In addition to the new films I mentioned seeing earlier, I have seen one of the animated nominees (ISLE OF DOGS) and one of the documentaries up this year (RBG). This year, I’ve decided to add four more categories into the mix – Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best Screenplay (original) and Best Screenplay (adapted). By adding these other categories into my Oscar Run planning, it now means I have 20 total films to attempt to find and see by the Oscars, which air Sunday, Feb. 24. Will I be able to do it? Wow, that’s a lot! I’m not sure if I’ll be able to find everything, but I’ll certainly give it a try. I always love a challenge and when movies are involved, well, those are my favorite kinds of challenges.
Which films do you plan on seeing this Oscar season? Anybody left out that you think deserved a spot? I won’t divulge mine at the moment because I will be putting together my own Oscar nominees and winners list for a future blog, closer to the telecast. More on that then.
Oscar Run 2019 will officially begin later tonight. Hmm… whatever will I choose to see? You’ll find out on Movie Mondays each week. Stay tuned.
There are no rules with the Oscar Run – the mission is to see the film wherever, whenever and however I can. As you’d expect, this annual venture can get pretty costly, so I’m thrilled when I can find something available for free on one of the services I’m already paying for like HBO, Netflix, Amazon.com, etc. For that reason, that will always be where I look first. In past years, I’ve traveled a few hours by car to see a film in a theater far away. Now with all of these wonderful streaming services available and our cable company’s own films-on-demand capabilities, I expect I’ll have a lot of access just a click away right in my own home. At least I’m counting on that! Last year, I saw quite a few of my Oscar Run films at home either by ordering and paying a flat $5.99 or so for the film which often my hubby watched with me and it was markedly cheaper than sitting in the theater. So I am hoping to do that again this year for a number of these nominees.
For the 53 nominations (5 per category other than the 8 up for Best Picture) in those 10 categories comprising my Oscar Run 2019, here are the films I need to see listed below in order of most nominations I’ll knock off with a viewing listed first.
I’m looking forward to checking out many of the movies in this year’s nominees list. I’ll keep you posted on my progress. As always, thanks for reading. ~ Chris K.
