Your Weekly Kuhnspiration (April 30, 2012)

Welcome to Monday. But this is not just any Monday. This is a very special Monday. Why, you ask? Because today I’m going to ask you to think about something you probably haven’t thought about it in a long time.

It’s a question you used to be asked all the time, ad nauseum really. I equate it with the same level of nagging pregnant women get when folks hound them about their upcoming due date or sex of the baby. And as similarly obvious as asking the new lottery winners what they are going to do with all of that money.

But this week, I’m going to ask you this question with a special Kuhnspirational twist to it, of course.

It’s your chance to get creative, let your mind go and let your dreams take over and either applaud or flip a bird at your history and where it has led you.

And that question is…

Wait for it…

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Been a while since someone asked, hasn’t it? The funny thing is we chuckle at the thought of asking this of someone who just turned 42 a month ago, but it’s as relevant to me now as it was at 9 or 19. In fact, maybe more so.

(Yeah, that’s me at the age of 4 demonstrating my musical talents. Thankfully, I realized early on that I probably shouldn’t explore the music business when I couldn’t master anything beyond “Chopsticks” and “Blueberry Hill.”)

It is only after we get a little life “practice” under our belt and explore our interests – in college, in work, in the world – that we can really answer that question honestly. So what I’d like you to do this week – and I will do the same – is think about that question and answer it at those ages… at 9, at 19 and today, and let’s see where you thought you wanted to go, where you went and where you should really be going. Sound good?

I’ll check back with you later in the week to offer my own thoughts, but I would absolutely love to hear from you. So please share your answers here if you’d like.

Cheers to finding that daily spark in your life!

Chris

  1. At 47 I mostly have a direction figured out – but have yet to know exactly what I want to be when I grow up. At 16 I wanted to just be a mom, at 18 a hair dresser, at 21 a travel agent at 25 a forestry/park ranger. Took a break from dreaming till about 40 and just survived, and then realized whatever I did, I wanted it to be outdoors related…and here I am, following that path as best I can!

I think you’ve hit it on the head, none of us may ever fully know exactly what we want to be. But the fact that you’ve determined WHERE you feel most at home is as important as WHAT you’re doing. Sometimes I meet people who clearly are not corporate office people and they’re miserable in the 9-5 rat race cycle of their lives. Figuring out that all-important where is certainly an awesome starting point. Thanks for sharing 🙂
